How to pursue a challenging problem? Pursuing challenging problems is a central part of any manager or leader’s role. If you think of what most companies do, is that they tackle a large challenging problem that is bigger than what any particular individual can do themselves. Pursuing challenging problems are also very important because very few people are willing to do them individually. The simple fact of pursuing a challenging problem will make what you provide a competitive advantage.
So, how do you pursue a challenging problem? There are two techniques which have been known for many years. The first is differentiation of tasks. This is simply just figuring out ways to specialize and to find out tasks using the division of labor. The second is integration of these different tasks. Once you divide up all of the different test then you have to figure out a way to synthesize them and make sense of all of these tasks as a whole.
For example, if one were to create a new business, what they would do is focus on one particular task at a time and then at some point in the future put them all together such that they made adequate sense. From a behavioral perspective, there is such thing as the planning fallacy. In other words, one should not think about how to do this in a rational sense but let it evolve when there is the need to do so.
