The Strangeness of Saying “Congratulations On Your Beautiful Baby,” And Business Strategy Video
The other day I read something on Facebook that I thought was particularly curious and it was somebody that was congratulating another person on the beautiful baby. I do the same greeting, but then I started thinking about what this actually means.
According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, congratulations generally means “to express vicarious pleasure to (a person) on the occasion of success or good fortune.”
The reason I think that this is curious to me was because of the randomness of the outcome for the particular action. Nobody seeks out to achieve a beautiful baby. It just happens. And for those people that do you actually plan for a beautiful baby, chance plays a large role. Agency in this case has very little role, thus perhaps the better saying might be “I am so happy that you played the lottery and won.”
But, then I started thinking more for a strategic perspective. In strategic management, we are very concerned about the possession of resources that I allow you too achieve some success in the long run. The belief is that resources that are valuable, rare, and inimitable allow a firm to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. This merely focuses on the possession of the potential for good fortune. It is not that you achieved a good fortune.
Here’s the thing. It’s not just simply the possession of that resource that is important but also how are you manage in cultivate those resources. As it’s not necessarily just the possession of that resource that is important, but what you do with that particular resource. That’s, I think a better greeting and somebody has a baby is “You are about to embark on one of the greatest journeys of your life.”
