How Do You Write An Amazing Theory Section In Science? (How To Write Theory In A Manuscript ) Video
I talk about how to create an amazing theory section in a scientific research article. My article is geared towards senior undergraduate and graduate students interested in writing scientific articles. It is especially relevant to those who want to publish in top-tier journals. It provides all of the details of my own struggles with writing research articles.
The theory section or literature review is not simply a regurgitation of all of the relevant theories on the topic. While this is sometimes taught, it is probably not the best practice. Your goal is to build on an existing theory. If you focus on many theories, it is hard to do this building.
The key to writing a good theory section, sometimes called a literature review, is to detail one or two theories that are pertinent to the dependent variable. If you use one theory, then you will have to explain relationships extremely well. If you use two theories you have to show how one theory augments the other. This is called a moderating or mediating relationship. A moderating relationship shows how something is suppressed or exacerbated. A mediating relationship shows how a third variable provides the go-between in a relationship between two variables.
The key to writing an amazing theory section is to tell a story about the dependent variable. The story starts off with some sort of hook showing that there is a problem in the literature that cannot be solved as it stands. Then you are going to solve this particular problem. Usually, the theory section ends with a puzzle that can only be solved with the hypothesis and methodology in your study. This is to hook the reader and get them interested in the methods that you chose.
