What Is The Organizational Structure Of A Company? Organizational Design & Organizational Theory Video

In this video, I provide several definitions of organization by different authors, describe the organizational structure of a company, describe the purpose of organizational structure, and get into several types of types of organizational structure.

What is the definition of organization by different authors?

An organization is defined as some collectivity in which individuals pursue a common goal (Scott and Davis, 2007). An organization can be viewed as a rational system has as a tool (Baum and Rowley, 2002). It also can be viewed as systems, such as some functional system (Burrell and Morgan, 1979) or as a tool for decision-making and a way to accumulate knowledge (Cyert and March, 1963).

What does an organization include? Organizations generally contain many things, including people, behaviors, rituals, technology, institutions, etc. Organizations also occur at multiple levels, including at the individual, team, or organization.

What is an organizational structure? An organizational structure is some set of relationships between people within and between the organization. Lots of people have done work on organizational structure and organizational design, including Lawrence and Lorsch, Burns and Stalker, Felipe Csaszar, Phanish Puranam, and others.

The purpose of organizational structure is to help facilitate decision-making within an organization, and the adaptiveness, or fitness, of an organization to its environment. The end result of an effective organizational structure is improved efficiency and financial performance of the organization.

Why is organizational structure important? Organizational structure helps to facilitate the flow of information, and decision-making authority within the organization. Without a good organizational structure, we believe that some members of the organization can get information overload or the organization will miss out on excellent novel opportunities. Moreover, the general belief is that organizations will perform poorly with a mismatched structure with its environment.

There are several types of organizational structure. There are formal organizational structures and informal organizational structures. Formal organizational structures are structures that are codified in the organization. Informal organizational structures generally describe the informal personal relationships in the organization.

Several examples of organizational structure for different companies include organic structures, which tend to have flat decentralized organizations, or mechanistic structures, which tend to have larger hierarchies and emphasize efficiency. Organic structures work well when creativity is needed, but mechanistic work well when efficiency is needed.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.

About the Site 🌐

This site provides links to random videos hosted at YouTube, with the emphasis on random. πŸŽ₯

Origins of the Idea 🌱

The original idea for this site stemmed from the need to benchmark the popularity of a video against the general population of YouTube videos. 🧠

Challenges Faced πŸ€”

Obtaining a large sample of videos was crucial for accurate ranking, but YouTube lacks a direct method to gather random video IDs.

Even searching for random strings on YouTube doesn't yield truly random results, complicating the process further. πŸ”

Creating Truly Random Links πŸ› οΈ

The YouTube API offers additional functions enabling the discovery of more random videos. Through inventive techniques and a touch of space-time manipulation, we've achieved a process yielding nearly 100% random links to YouTube videos.

About YouTube πŸ“Ί

YouTube, an American video-sharing website based in San Bruno, California, offers a diverse range of user-generated and corporate media content. 🌟

Content and Users 🎡

Users can upload, view, rate, share, and comment on videos, with content spanning video clips, music videos, live streams, and more.

While most content is uploaded by individuals, media corporations like CBS and the BBC also contribute. Unregistered users can watch videos, while registered users enjoy additional privileges such as uploading unlimited videos and adding comments.

Monetization and Impact πŸ€‘

YouTube and creators earn revenue through Google AdSense, with most videos free to view. Premium channels and subscription services like YouTube Music and YouTube Premium offer ad-free streaming.

As of February 2017, over 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, with the site ranking as the second-most popular globally. By May 2019, this figure exceeded 500 hours per minute. πŸ“ˆ
