Hay, a mi parecer, siete clases de falsos devotos y falsas devociones a la Santísima Virgen, a saber: los devotos críticos; los devotos escrupulosos; los devotos exteriores; los devotos presuntuosos; los devotos inconstantes; los devotos hipócritas; los devotos interesados. Pongamos, pues, suma atención, a fin de no pertenecer al número de los devotos críticos, que no creen en nada, pero todo lo critican; los devotos escrupulosos, que temen ser demasiado devotos a la Santísima Virgen por respeto a Jesucristo; los devotos exteriores, que hacen consistir toda su devoción en prácticas exteriores; los devotos presuntuosos, que, bajo el oropel de una falsa devoción a la Santísima Virgen, viven encenagados en el pecado; los devotos inconstantes, que por ligereza cambian sus prácticas de devoción, o las abandonan, a la menor tentación; los devotos hipócritas, que entran en las cofradías y visten la librea de la Santísima Virgen para hacerse pasar por santos; y, finalmente, los devotos interesados, que sólo recurren a la Santísima Virgen para librarse de males corporales o alcanzar bienes de este mundo.
