Nerd-Out Wednesday: The Importance of Theory?
Nerd-Out Wednesday is a series where I talk about different words in science, particularly it is relevant to students going into graduate school or a PhD in the social sciences. It is also relevant to senior level college students who are interested in doing in-depth study of a phenomenon, particularly for those interested in quantitative research methods. Because I am interested in how organizations work, I talk about organizational theory, organizational strategy, organizational learning, but there are many theories of management.
This is particularly relevant those that are currently writing their dissertation/thesis, thinking about a dissertation proposal, and for those that are interested in lessons about how to write a good thesis.
What is a theory definition in science? A theory is a system ideas then explain particular phenomenon, it is meant to be generalizable across multiple phenomenon.
When you think of any scientific study what you often have is that the independent variable leads to the dependent variable. There has to be a reason why that the independent variable and the dependent variable are related, and this is often called the theory. Another words, the theory provides the mechanisms or multiple mechanisms through which variables are related.
Theory is incredibly important because it helps to not only explain the relationship, but also rule out other possible mechanisms through which that relationship can and cannot occur. A good test of a theory would provide some situation where only that explanation which is based on the theory will provide the hypothesized results.
Theory is also very important because it allows scientists to generalized to other situations then the one in which the theory is currently being tested.
