ABOUT THE TRIP
Los Angeles / Temecula:
We flex from Chicago to Los Angeles to enjoy a couple days there before flying out to Hawaii. We did some touristy things in LA, such as the Griffith Observatory, hit up the Beach Cities (Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo), before heading up to Palos Verdes for sunset.
--Griffith Observatory: we parked our car at the bottom of the Observatory and took a hike up. It had some great views and was overall not too bad. The earlier you go, the better so you can be the rush of tourists. If you are making a day out of it, you can walk up and see the Hollywood sign as well. It took us about an hour and 1/2 to just walk up to the Griffith Observatory and back down
--Beach Cities: These are always fun. Looks of beach, bars, restaurants and waves. All of them offer some great views. You can hop from beach to beach rather easily. Parking can be tough, so find a pay to park and enjoy a couple hours at the beach.
--Palos Verdes: Highly recommended if you have never been. There is a place called Nelsen's which resides in Terranea. Its a very nice resort, but at sunset its the place to be to catch some of the best views overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
--Temecula: This is the Napa/Sonoma of Southern California. These wineries are not for the masses or big business. While there are a couple larger wineries, most of much smaller and enjoyable than the ones in the North. You can easily hit 3-4 in a day if you plan to start around 11am and finish around 4-5pm as they are all very close together. Temecula is located only about an hour and 1/2 (depending on traffic) from LA.
Honolulu:
We flew out of San Diego and arrived in Honolulu around 3pm HST. We chartered a limo, which you can find great prices from $70-$100 for a trip to Waikiki Beach. While the hotel was great, Waikiki was fun and had a lot of beach and shopping, it is very touristy. I'm glad I visited and I'm not sure I would go back there again. The only 2 things I wish I could have done was to visit Pearl Harbor and to head up to the North Shore, but I'll likely wait to do that in the years ahead as I was not all that impressed with Honolulu.
Maui:
This place is absolutely amazing. Maui has so much to offer. Great beaches, food, forest, hiking, snorkeling, scenic routes, craters, waterfalls...I mean the list goes on and on. We stayed in Wailea, which was great, but if we went again, we would try the Northwest side as its beautiful up there as well. There is not a bad place on Maui. Definitely a place that we would go back to. We did the Road to Hana, which was extremely long (about 9 hours with stops), but saw some amazing waterfalls and beaches and at the end there is a treat (Maui Wines)!
We also did a catamaran and did some snorkeling, but the weather did not cooperate so make sure to check the forecast before planning it out. As always, make time for a luau. We spent the rest of our time enjoying the beaches and views from all over the island.
