Diagnostic overshadowing: Why some doctors miss important diagnoses in people with mental illness
A patient with schizoaffective disorder started to feel very tired soon after starting a new medication for his diabetes. Doctors would later diagnose depression as the cause of his tiredness -- not the recently-started new diabetes medication. This is an example of diagnostic overshadowing, a phenomenon where symptoms are incorrectly attributed to mental illness.
This lecture explains some of the causes of diagnostic overshadowing and offers suggestions for how to stop it.
