The limitations section is one of the last things you think about in a study following the scientific method. Most people believe the limitations section of a scientific article is about providing the immediate and obvious limitations of the current research or research proposal. Traditionally, the limitations section provides a list of all the possible limitations and the scope (ie. boundaries) of the study. For example, some people simply list the assumptions made in the research process or the study.
Here, I argue that there is a better way of going about a research limitations section. The problem with this particular perspective is that it provides very little guidance in what to do in future research, and it does not think about what future researchers should do. The limitations section is one of the few ways that you can advance research in your field. A researcher has tremendous amount of freedom about which limitations they highlight, as most studies have innumerable threats to validity.
A possible suggestion is to use the limitations section to highlight the most interesting and most fruitful areas of future research. Inevitably, somebody will pick up a section and build on it, such as perform a study that tackles one of the limitations explicitly. Thus, it’s very important for you to think about creative and fruitful avenues of possible research when you are writing the limitations section. That emphasis on creative and fruitful limitations should help your study gain extra traction in future research.
