Blues chevillé au corps, c’est un éloge du son grave résolument ancré dans les racines «Mingusiennes» aux effluves «Ellingtonniennes»!
S'exprimant exclusivement au sax baryton, Scali est de la race de ceux qui aiment faire de leur instrument un étendard et le planter au devant de l’orchestre. En l’associant au trombone de Glenn Ferris, il affirme une sorte de credo esthétique qui déploie une palette sonore à la richesse séduisante, associant le tranchant des anches avec le velouté des cuivres, le piqué du baryton avec la rondeur du trombone. « Pour moi, ces deux instruments sont comme les deux faces d’un cuir : l’une lisse et douce au toucher ; l’autre râpeuse et rugueuse sous la main. Cela permet d’enchevêtrer leurs textures et de donner consistance et relief à la musique, car leur correspondent aussi deux façons de souffler et de produire le son. »
