This group of designers led by women is reinventing the entire pelvic exam experience, starting with the nearly 200-year-old vaginal speculum, and they’re making empathy a key aspect of their design.
Pelvic exams are meant to be a normal part of taking care of your body, but for many people they’re an embarrassing and anxiety-inducing experience. The exams are so uncomfortable that many choose to skip them altogether, putting their health at risk.
The vaginal speculum was created by a man named James Marion Sims, who tested it on slave women in the 1840s. So it comes as no surprise that Sims’ legacy often goes uncelebrated.
What is surprising is, though, is the fact that the vaginal speculum used in pelvic exams today is very similar to the one Sims created.
