As delegates meet this week in London for the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee, new research shows that wind-assist technologies like rotor sails can reduce fuel use and emissions from ships and could even help achieve the goals of IMO’s initial greenhouse gas strategy.
The ICCT's new study combined weather and ship traffic data to model rotor sail performance for five ships. This chart represents the high-fuel-savings routes; per-hour fuel savings ranged from tens of kilograms (the areas shaded blue) to hundreds of kilograms (the areas shaded green). This equates to route-level fuel and CO2 savings ranging from about 1% to nearly 50%, or about 1-to-12 percent per rotor.
