Hemoglobinopathy is a term used to describe a group of genetic disorders that affect the hemoglobin molecule in red blood cells. One type of hemoglobinopathy is sickle cell anemia, a condition in which the hemoglobin molecule is abnormal, leading to the formation of sickle-shaped red blood cells. These cells are stiff and can get stuck in small blood vessels, leading to blockages and restricted blood flow. This can cause a wide range of symptoms including pain, fatigue, organ damage, and an increased risk of infections.
Sickle cell anemia is caused by a genetic mutation in the HBB gene, which provides instructions for making beta-globin, a component of hemoglobin. The mutation results in the production of abnormal hemoglobin known as hemoglobin S. This abnormal hemoglobin can cause red blood cells to become stiff and sickle-shaped.
